The short version

The Sweaty Yeti is a wood-fired sauna with a hot tub and barrel cold plunge in the Distillery Yard in Lanesborough, the Shannon town at the top of Lough Ree. Social sessions take up to eight people: 45 minutes on weekdays for €17, 75 minutes at weekends, or sauna and plunge only for €15. Coffee and Neapolitan pizza are served in the same yard. It suits anyone within half an hour of Longford, Roscommon or Athlone who wants the full hot and cold circuit on one ticket.

What sets it apart

The Sweaty Yeti is the only sauna in Lanesborough and one of three public saunas in County Longford. Its standard ticket includes three things: the wood-fired sauna, a hot tub and a barrel cold plunge. That combination is rarer than it sounds. In Tigh's October 2026 read of 194 Irish sauna websites, only 36 mention a hot tub at all.

The second thing is the yard. The Distillery Yard also holds Cata Coffee, serving speciality coffee, matcha and bagels, and Píosa Pizza, making Neapolitan-style pizza from hand-made dough. A session can end with a flat white or a slice without leaving the gate.

Sessions and prices

Every social session runs on a fixed timetable and is booked online at thesweatyyeti.ie. On a sample weekday in October 2026, Wednesday the 7th, evening sessions started at 6pm, 7pm and 9pm, and the October calendar shows the sauna closed on Tuesdays.

The heat and the cold

The sauna is wood-fired, which is how most of Ireland's new saunas are heated: in Tigh's read of the same 194 websites, 111 describe a wood-fired stove. The cold side is a barrel plunge rather than open water, so the temperature does not depend on the season or the river.

The venue publishes a simple rhythm for first-timers, which is worth following on a first visit:

HeatAbout fifteen minutes on the bench. Leave earlier if you need to.
ColdThree or four minutes in the barrel plunge, or less on a first visit.
RestA few minutes in the hot tub or the air before the next round.
RepeatThree or four full cycles fit in a 45 minute session.

Three or four rounds of heat, cold and rest is the whole of the ritual. Everything else is detail.

Things to do near Lanesborough

A sauna in Lanesborough pairs well with a day on the water or in the bogs of south Longford. These are all a short drive from the Distillery Yard.

  • Lough Ree. The second largest lake on the Shannon starts at Lanesborough's bridge and runs south to Athlone. Boating, angling and lakeshore walks start from the town.
  • Rathcline Castle. The ruins of a castle stand on the shore of Lough Ree just south of the town.
  • Corlea Trackway, Kenagh. An Iron Age oak road across the bog, dated to 148 BC, preserved in a visitor centre run by the Office of Public Works. It opens seasonally, so check before you travel.
  • The Royal Canal Greenway. A long-distance walking and cycling route through County Longford that ends at Cloondara, where the canal meets the Shannon, a few kilometres north of Lanesborough.
  • Center Parcs Longford Forest. The forest resort near Ballymahon, south of Lough Ree.
  • Roscommon town and Athlone. Ten and thirty minutes away for food, a castle and a longer evening.

Is there a sauna in Longford?

Yes, three. The Sweaty Yeti in Lanesborough on the Roscommon border, Firecracker Lakeside Sauna at Leebeen Park near Aughnacliffe in the north of the county, and Árd Sauna and Wellness in Granard. All three are compared in Tigh's Longford guide.

What should I bring to the Sweaty Yeti?

The venue asks for a towel to sit on in the sauna, a clean swimsuit, a water bottle, and sliders or sandals for the walkways, plus a second towel for showering afterwards. Arrive five minutes before your slot.

How long should I stay in the sauna?

The venue's own guidance is about fifteen minutes a round, followed by three or four minutes in the cold. A 45 minute session leaves time for three or four full cycles. Go at your own pace and leave the heat if you feel unwell.
